Bharat Ratna and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was Prime Minister three times, passed away at 5.05 pm Thursday evening. He was 93 years old. They were admitted to AIIMS for two months. But, during the last 36 hours, their health deteriorated. He was kept on life support system. Earlier, he was ill for 9 years.

Atalji was admitted to AIIMS on June 11 after the infection in the urinary tract. His only one kidney was working. For 30 years, he was undergoing treatment at AIIMS under the supervision of Dr. Randeep Guleria, a personal physician of Atalji.

On Wednesday evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached AIIMS to know about his movements. After that he went to AIIMS on Thursday afternoon. BJP President Amit Shah also visited AIIMS twice. Apart from this, many Central ministers, including BJP’s senior leader LK Advani, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, reached AIIMS.

Vajpayee was the prime minister of the country three times. It became the first prime minister in 1996 and his government could live only for 13 days. In 1998, he became the Prime Minister for the second time, then his government lasted 13 months. In 1999, Vajpayee became the prime minister for the third time and completed a five-year term.

He was elected 10 times for Lok Sabha and 2 Rajya Sabha. His birthday is celebrated on December 25 as ‘Good Governance Day’. The popularity of Atal Bihari Vajpayee was that his party was not the opposition leader but he listened and respected his point of view.

Vajpayee, who always charmed people with his poems and speeches, was away from public life due to poor health. In 2005, he had retired from active politics and since then he was at his house. Atal Bihari Vajpayee had trouble speaking and writing for many years. He was unable to recognize anyone.

The last time his picture came out in 2015, when the then President of India Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself went to his residence and honored him with the ‘Bharat Ratna’, the highest civilian honor of the country. Doctor Randeep Gularia is PM Vajpayee’s personal doctor before the last three decades. Even in AIIMS, his team was treating Vajpayee.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was External Affairs Minister in the Janata Party Government in 1977. He got an opportunity to give a speech on the biggest stage of the world. The representatives of the UN, overwhelmed by Vajpayee’s great speech in Hindi, stood up and played applause. Giving the message of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, he had mentioned about serious issues such as apartheid as well as protection of human rights.
